A VERY FINE COLLECTION OF FIRST SEPARATE PRINTINGS OF THE EMINENT CHARLES JOSEPH MINARD, many of which originally appeared in various scientific journals, including Annals de Ponts et Chaussées . Minard was professor for many years at the Écoles des Ponts et Chaussées and was a superb hydraulic engineer and an inspired teacher. He worked on the ports of Antwerp and Flushing, was in charge of several of the most important canals in France, and was the author of several crucial reports, particularly on the port of Le Havre (the third item) and on the lower Seine (the fourth item). Several important graphs are included, notably the "Tableau Chronologique de l'Entretien du Pavé de Paris: in the first work and the graph in the second work that provides both direction and data measures (not unlike his world map of 1864 exports of French wine). Minard is best remembered for his flow map published in 1869 on the subject of Napoleon's disastrous Russian campaign of 1812, called "the best data graphic of the 19th century" by Edward Tufte. See Tufte, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information , pp. 24-25, 39 and 40. All of Minard's works are VERY RARE, with none appearing in American Book Prices Current in at least 30 years.
