MINIATURE BOOK OF HOURS, use of Paris, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Paris, third quarter 14th century and Germany 15th century] 64 x 43mm. i + 108 vellum and 80 paper leaves: vellum, 1 4, 2-14 8; paper, 1-3 1 2, 4 8, 5 3(of 4 lacking iv), 6 1 0, 7 1 1(of 12, xi pasted on following leaf, xii lacking), 8 1 4, ff.1-108 10 lines written in brown ink in a gothic bookhand, justification: 37 x 22mm, rubrics in red, one-line initials alternately red or blue, two-line initials of pink or blue with white decoration and trefoil terminals on grounds of burnished gold with flowers or leaves in the infills, EIGHT ILLUMINATED INITIALS AND BORDERS, of red, blue, burnished gold ivy-leaf sprays: paper leaves written in a varying number of lines in brown ink, mostly with red initials and rubrics (likely lacking at least one gathering between vellum and paper leaves, some offsetting from illumination and slight rubbing of several illuminated initials, erosion from metal clasp affecting final six paper leaves and ink blots on 10 paper leaves). German 15th-century brown panelled calf, ruled and stamped in blind with a cinquefoil tool, brass hinge from clasp on upper cover (wear to spine, catch lacking). PROVENANCE: Initially made for use in Paris, with characteristically Parisian ivy-leaf borders and initials, this little Book of Hours was in Germany by the 15th century when a female owner had the Office of the Dead and the prayers in the feminine form added to the 14th-century Offices. The manuscript received its binding at that time. Maura Brünin von Lienberyng wrote her name in a 16th-century hand inside the front endleaf. CONTENT: Extract from the Gospel of John ff.1-4; Office of the Virgin ff.5-108v: matins f.5, lauds f.28, prime f.53v, terce f.65v, sext f.73v, none f.80v, vespers f.88, compline f.95, Short Hours of the Cross, matins to opening of terce f.105-108v: Office of the Dead, opening in the first nocturn ff.1-64v; Prayers ff.65-68v; Litany ff.70-80, added on an inserted gathering.
