[Mining interest] A. Lange & Sohne, Glashutte B/ Dresden, an 18 carat gold keyless wind open face pocket watch, no. 45573, circa 1900, three quarter plate movement, Swiss lever escapement, bimetallic split balance, engraved A. Lange & Sohne, Glashutte & Dresden, 45573, white enamel dial, black Roman numerals, spade hands, subsidiary seconds dial, five piece hinged case with plain polished covers, the inner cover set with an enamel map of mining areas in South Africa, accompanied by a A. Lange & Sohne case, diameter 54mm In the 1880s the discovery of gold on a farm in South Africa caused the Witwatersrand Gold Rush and led to the establishment of the city of Johannesburg. People travelled from all over the world to establish mining companies in the area, entrepreneurs who set up these companies were known as Randlords. The map in this pocket watch shows Langlaagte Deep, Johannesburg, which developed in to a village for employees from 1903. Condition report disclaimer
