MISSAL, for Augsburg use -- Missale secundum ritum Augustensis ecclesie . Dillingen: Sebald Mayer, 1555. 2° (355 x 245mm). Printed in red and black. With final blank. Full woodcut title border incorporating the Cardinal-Bishop's arms, full-page woodcut of the Virgin and Child with Saints Ulrich and Afra and the arms of the Cardinal-Bishop on title verso, woodcut of the adoration of the sacrament of the altar within full architectural woodcut border on 4+8v, the same border repeated on 10 other pages, full-page woodcut crucifixion opening the canon, large woodcut initial T, small Pascal lamb, many historiated initials, printed music. THE CANON LEAVES (Y 8 ) PRINTED ON VELLUM AND WITH THE CANON WOODCUTS FINELY COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Small holes in title and second leaf, occasional light spotting, a few neat marginal tears, one just into woodcut border on nn2, colour lightly rubbed.) Contemporary south German blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards, remains of two fore-edge clasps (some light staining and wear). Provenance : Mrs. C.E. Ellis (sale Sotheby's, 30 January 1928, lot 234, £6.5 to E.Ph. Goldschmidt) -- [sale Sothebys, 16 October 1967, lot 225, £210 to H. Domizlaff]. Printed at the first press at Dillingen for the Cardinal Prince Bishop of Augsburg, Otto Truchsess von Waldburg, the 1555 missal is 'A MAGNIFICENT BAROQUE PRODUCTION (Stanley Morison English Prayer Books , p.111). The Cardinal Bishop commissioned Matthias Gerung to produce five fine woodcuts to illustrate the work. Dodgson also attributes the canon initial and pascal lamb to Gerung, but they are not confirmed by Hollstein.
