MISSAL, in English, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Written in England c.1892] 177 x 142mm, 268 leaves, ruled in red, written in black ink in a gothic bookhand, rubrics in red, versals in gold or blue with penwork decoration, 3-line initials in colours on gold ground infilled with branchwork, 5 SMALL AND 6 LARGE MINIATURES, and 13 pages with full or partial borders of ivy leaves. White pigskin over wooden boards, tooled in blind by Johanna Birkenruth, dated 1892. Written and illuminated in the manner of an early 15th-century manuscript. The text comprises a Calendar, followed by the Order of Administration of the Holy Communion, Confession of Faith, Collects, Gospels and Epistles throughout the Year. The 5 large miniatures depict f.14v. Celebration of the Mass; f.20. The Holy Trinity, enthroned; f.27. The Holy Trinity standing supported by angels; f.33. The Crucifixion; f.36. Virgin and Child with Angels playing music (this is flaked); f.44. The Annunciation. The small miniatures show: f.27v. The Birth of the Virgin; f.28. John the Baptist; f.28v. Ascension; f.29. Pentecost; f.29v. The Holy Trinity, God the Father enthroned with the crucified Christ. Johanna Birkenruth, the binder, was an early and eminent member of the Guild of Women Binders
