MISSALE, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM [Nice, dated 1442] 263 x 200mm. 155 + 2 added leaves and mediaeval flyleaves, (lacks one leaf), collation: 1 6 (+ inserted leaf with armorial) 2 6 3-5 8 6 s 8 +2 7-19 8 (lacks 8/2) 20 6 +1 (20/2 inserted, 20/6 blank), double column, 25 lines, justification 173 x 123mm., written in black ink in an Italian gothic rotunda, rubrics in red, 2-line initials in blue and red with pen flourishes, larger caligraphic initials, two 4-line and three 7-line decorated initials on gold ground, the first with full floral and foliate border with gold illumination, an added 15th-century MINIATURE OF THE CRUCIFIXION (in a coarser style) and 16th-century armorial, 5 pages with music on 4 staves (first leaf rubbed and smudged, corners soiled from use). Bound in later red velvet with metal cornerpieces and clasps, PROVENANCE: 1). Made for the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy at Nice. The colophon at end reads: Iste liber est capelle domine nostre de misericordia niciensis factus ex parte fratrum dicte capelle et precium ipsius in maiori parte extitit solutum de precio cuius dam vinee legate ipsi capelle per lansarotum tunc libertum olim serinis nobilis bartholomei de solario et inde empte per girandum bochalerii confratrem ipsius elemosine et factus et scriptus fuit per me girandum capelle priorem de sancto salvatore et completus sub millesimo ccccxlii et de mense augusti. Additions to the Calendar indicate that the book remained in Nice for many years. 2). 15th-century added armorial: gules, a lion rampant or, two bulls quartered azure, inscribed below "Sanudo", 3). Maitre Jeanet, 18th-century inscription. TEXT: Calendar for Nice, includes Honorati ep. (January 16), Devote (January 27), Ponci (of Cimiez, Nice, May 11), Siacrii (May 23), Lamberti ep. (of Vence, May 26), Helmi ep. (June 2), Reparate (October 8), Theofredi (November 18); added Consecratio eccl. cathedralis (September 28). The Sanctorale has masses for Honoratus of Lérins, Archbishop of Arles (f.78), Poncius of Cimiez (f.90), Syacrius, first Bishop of Nice (f.91); added at end is a special blessing for a new boat. Leroquais does not mention any liturgical books for the use of Nice.
