Collation: a 8 b 4 A-S 8 T 6 U 4; 2a- 2c 8 X 4 Y 2 Z 4 Aa-Mm 8 Nn 1 0. 306 leaves, with blank 2c8. CANON LEAVES PRINTED ON VELLUM, printed in red and black (red printed first), 22 leaves of printed music on staves. Xylographic title, historiated initials all coloured by a contemporary hand, full-page woodcut of the arms of Gabriel von Eyb coloured by a contemporary hand, full-page woodcuts of St. Willibald, patron saint of Eichstätt, and of the Crucifixion, small woodcut of the sudarium flanked by angels. 35 lines and headline, double column. (Tears in about 30 leaves, most marginal and neatly repaired, a few into text with small loss in one, Z 1,2, Ii8, and Kk1-2 on guards, Kk2 lower margin replaced.) CONTEMPORARY REBDORF BINDING: blindstamped pigskin over wooden boards panelled with lozenges and tooled with rolls and stamps [Kyriss 28: 1-3,7], including Rebdorf stamp on lower cover, evidence of two fore-edge clasps (lightly worn, hinges repaired); modern green slipcase. Provenance : Rebdorf, Bavaria, abbey of Augustinian Canons (presentation inscription from the Bishop of Eichstätt dated 1520 on vellum flyleaf bound in; A. Strauss, Opera rariora...Rebdorf , 1790, pp.328-9.). Fourth edition of the Eichstätt Missal, PRESENTED BY GABRIEL VON EYB, BISHOP OF EICHSTäTT, PUBLISHER OF THE EDITION, TO THE AUGUSTINIAN CANONS AT REBDORF. In the 18th-century Rebdorf catalogue the volume is described in its full coloured splendour and as an 'editio splendida... opus in ipsa Diocesi rarissimum'. The Crucifixion woodcut is attributed to Hans Burgkmair; in some copies a woodcut of the same subject by Dürer appears in its place. Similarly, the St. Willibald cut is one of two known (this as Dodgson p.416, 89), given to Springinklee or Schön. The armorial woodcut is by Springinklee, as are the historiated initials. Distribution of the edition was sporadic, as attested by copies known with the arms of Gabriel's successor, Christoph von Pappenheim, replacing Gabriel's, and one containing a letter of 1556 by the then Bishop Eberhard, stating that distribution had been interrupted by war, and that he was facilitating it now, with a newly printed canon. The collation of the canon leaves is somewhat conjectural but appears to agree with the British Library copy, which may be determined by the sewing.
