Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's Sword Identified to Lieutenant Colonel Gershom Mott, 5th New Jersey Volunteer Regiment, c. 1861, gilt-brass hilt with wire-wrapped shagreen grip, plain blade with an import stamp on the ricasso, brown-painted steel scabbard with brass bands, engraved on the throat "Presented to/Lt. Col. G. Mott/5th N.J. Inf./1861," blade lg. 30 1/2, overall lg. 38 1/4 in. Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio. Note: Mott began his military service at the close of the Mexican War as a Lieutenant in the 10th United States Infantry. In 1861 he became Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was wounded during the battle of Second Manassas. He was appointed Brigadier General of volunteers in September of 1862. Wounded again during the Battle of Chancellorsville, he took command of the X Corps, third division, after he recuperated from his wounds and led his troops through the surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia.
