SONGS AND INCIDENTAL MUSIC FOR MODJESKA PRODUCTIONS OF SHAKESPEARE AND OTHER PLAYS. This lot features a collection of orchestral arrangements accompanying the theatrical productions of Helena Modjeska, the Polish actress who is best remembered for having brought Shakespeare to the American hinterlands in the late 19th century. Though Modjeska was celebrated on the New York and London stage, during the late 1880s and 1890s she spend nearly 9 months of every year traveling the country, performing short engagements across the heartland and the west. Modjeska brought actors, costumes, and props with her, but often used local musicians to staff her orchestra. This lot contains a grouping of orchestral arrangements used by Modjeska during her touring years, many marked in manuscript or print with her name and a note to return to concertmaster after the performance. Includes twelve part arrangements for Twelfth Night (arranger unknown, with variant version of “Come Away Death” by Frank A. Howson); King Henry VIII (arr. By L. Tomaszewicz); and Donna Diana (arr. By Herman Brode); with miscellaneous parts to arrangements for Cymbeline, Henry VII, and Macbeth. Other musical manuscripts by a Modjeska cousin are present as well. Creasing and wear throughout.
