MOLIÈRE, Jean Baptiste Poquelin de (1622-1673). Oeuvres . Edited by Marc-Antoine Joly. Paris: [Pierre Prault], 1734. 6 volumes, 4° (285 x 205mm). Half-titles, titles with engraved vignettes. Volume II with pre- and postliminary blanks, III-VI with preliminary blanks. Engraved portrait frontispiece by Lépicié after Coypel, 33 engraved plates by Laurent Cars after F. Boucher, 210 head- and tailpieces and 105 initials, including some repeats, by Cars and Joullain after Blondel, Bouchern and Oppenord. (?Without preliminary blank in volume I and postliminary blanks in volumes III-V, scattered light spotting and marking, some browning or dampstaining, neat marginal repair to verso of one plate.) Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with floral and foliate tools, green and red leather lettering-pieces, roll-tooled gilt turn-ins, green silk markers, red edges (extremities a little rubbed and chipped, some partial splitting on joints, some neat repairs on spines). Provenance : early manuscript pressmarks on rear free endpapers of volumes V-VI. FIRST ISSUE OF THIS EDITION, 'L'UN DES PLUS BEAUX LIVRES DE LA PREMIèRE PARTIE DU XVIII E SIèCLE' (Cohen-de Ricci). The present edition was prepared from the original editions of Molière's works, prefaced with a life by Le Serre, and illustrated with plates after François Boucher 'the book's format is noble, Molière's text is presented with more care than ever before, and Laurent Cars' engravings catch the spontaneity and elegance of Boucher's sketches with easy precision' (Ray French ). First issue, with the 'LA COMTEESE' misprint at volume VI, p.360, line 12, the erratic pagination and placement of the part title to 'Mémoires sur la vie ...' in volume I, and the mispaginations in volume VI ( not IV) noted by Reynaud. As is usual, the name Zaide appears in the cast list on volume VI, p.132. Brunet III, col.1798 ('Édition assez belle'); Cohen-de Ricci cols.712-714; Graesse IV, pp.562-563; Ray French 6; Reynaud cols.352-354; Thomas A Checklist of ... French Authors in Oxford Libraries 1526-1800 p.126. (6)
