MOLL, Herman (1654-1732). A System of Geography: or, a New & Accurate Description of the Earth in all its Empires, Kingdoms and States. London: A. and J. Churchil and T. Childe, 1701.
MOLL, Herman (1654-1732). A System of Geography: or, a New & Accurate Description of the Earth in all its Empires, Kingdoms and States. London: A. and J. Churchil and T. Childe, 1701. 2 parts in one volume, 2 o (313 x 205 mm). Title-page printed in red and black. Engraved frontispiece by M. Vander Gucht, 43 engraved maps, engraved diagrams in the text, 2 leaves of advertisements at end. Contemporary panelled calf (splitting to joints at spine ends). Provenance : Thomas Shelmerdine (contemporary bookdealer's inscription on recto of the front free endpaper: "November 1st 1706, I warent this Booke, to bee perfect Witnes, my Name Thomas Shelmerdine" a reassuring statement in view of the book's complicated collation); Niels Hansen Christensen (his sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 16 November 1976, lot 137). FIRST EDITION, variant issue, with both Churchil and Childe in the imprint, other copies have only Childe's name in the imprint. Moll's important work, containing the latest "discoveries and corrections" since the publication of the Thesaurus Geographicus in 1695. Part II contains Luyts's descriptions of Asia, Africa and America. Nine maps relate to America and include the representation of California as an island. The Churchil advertisement in the back is dated 1700. Phillips, Atlases 536; NMM, p.454; Sabin 49907.
