Monkey Gentleman Smoker Automaton by Gustave Vichy, c. 1885 With papier-mâché head, amber glass eyes, carved bone teeth, articulated eyelids, lip and jaw, metal hands and going-barrel motor with bellows in the torso, dressed in velvet smoking jacket, ht. 22 ½ in. (57 cm) plus top hat, paint renewed, newer papier-mâché on torso. With key initialed "G.V." and acorn-form stop/start. Included with the automaton is a custom-made glass case with brass plaque engraved: "Singe Fumeur, G. Vichy". – The gentlemanly monkey lifts the cigarette holder to his lips, blinks and moves his mouth, nods, turns his head to exhale a cloud of smoke, nods again and then lifts the monocle and peers through it curiously. – The Silber & Fleming catalog of 1885 offered a "Mechanical Monkey Smoker" which smoked in "a most perfect manner" for £ 6, 6 shillings. – An amusing monkey automaton with well synchronized movements and a particularly dramatic smoking action. Puppenautomat "Eleganter rauchender Affe" von Gustave Vichy, um 1885 Kopf aus Papiermaché, bernsteinfarbene Glasaugen, geschnitzte Zähne aus Bein; Augenlider, Lippe und Unterkiefer sind beweglich, Metallhände; Korpus mit Federwerkmotor, Mechanik und Blasebalg; gekleidet mit Samt-Smokingjacke, Gesamthöhe 65 cm; Farbe erneuert, Rumpf mit erneuertem Papiermaché, Schlüssel mit Initialen "G.V.", eichelförmiger Starthebel. Mit paßgenauem Glasgehäuse und Messing-Plakette graviert mit: "Singe Fumeur, G. Vichy". – Der Raucher hebt die Zigarettenspitze zum Mund, blinzelt und bewegt den Mund, nickt, dreht den Kopf und bläst den Rauch aus, nickt noch mal, hebt das Monokel und schaut sich neugierig um. – Der Silber-&-Fleming-Katalog von 1885 bot einen "Mechanical Monkey Smoker" an, welcher in perfekter Art rauchen sollte. – Ein amüsanter Automat mit perfekt synchronisierten Bewegungen und einer besonders theatralischen Art zu rauchen.
