Beschreibung:

Monoprint. 56.5x75.3 cm (22¼x29¾"). A one of a kind print signed by Enrique Chagoya at lower right. "In two new monoprint projects at Smith Andersen Editions, [Wisecrack and Orozco & Victor Hugo Meet at the Auction House], Chagoya returns to a topic he has explored previously—the precious and pretentious nature of the academy and the art world...In Orozco & Victor Hugo Meet at the Auction House—a reference to the populism of the Mexican muralist versus the high art of [the] French author—Chagoya again mixes aspects of high and low. The composition features three protagonists: at the left, a headless torso on a plinth (that recalls sculpture by August Rodin); at the center, a multi-limbed, barefoot figure with a briefcase (commerce) entangled in a ball of snakes (that recalls the classical sculpture of Laocoön); at the right, a lowbrow cartoon character. The snake-man and cartoon character 'speak' in bubbles across an imaginary socio-cultural divide—the former spouts meaningless 'high-brow' maxims, the latter spurts low-brow obscenity." Hilarie Faberman in Liberty Club: The Prints of Enrique Chagoya Smith Andersen rubber stamp at reverse.
