A note of apology regarding a personal business affair: "I have sent the d[ra]ft to Mr. Gouverneur by this nights mail, with a request to th P.M. to forward it, as soon as received, so that I hope it will reach him in due time...No one was to blame respecting the other except myself, & my neglect and inattention were entirely owing, to the great progress of interesting business for many days past," possibly referring here to his involvement in the events related to the creation of the Monroe Doctrine soon afterward.
