On crop failures at Monroe's Virginia farm and his mounting debt: "I will pay to your order five hundred dolls...next week, or whenever presented, and the balance at the end of ninety days from that time. I hope that this arrangement will suit you both. My crop in Albemarle & Loudon [counties] has been so miserably deficient, that the proceeds will hardly pay the current expenses of the plantations. Communicate with Mr. Dabney on the subject & let me hear from you without delay. Seal your letter, & write on the back "private" & then put it under another envelope..."
