In early June 1962, Marilyn Monroe stripped down for the now famous swimming pool scene on the set of the ill-fated George Cukor film Something's Got to Give. As no mainstream star had appeared nude in a major Hollywood production this was a considerable publicity stunt for a film that was already over budget and delayed by Marilyn's numerous absences. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the nude shoot, Marilyn was released from the film on June 8th and the film was abandoned shortly thereafter, prompting Life to run a photo from the shoot on its June 22nd cover with the headline "A Skinny-Dip You'll Never See on the Screen," sadly Marilyn's final cover for the magazine during her lifetime. Contemporary printings of the images from this shoot are rare, and this example was likely printed around the time the film was cancelled as the verso bears a long slug regarding the vivacity of Marilyn despite this film being halted in production. A second slug reports that this is one of the last photographs of Monroe and that the previous caption was written at the time of the shoot (this slug likely after her death on August 5th). The photo bears several stamps to the verso, one from the Camera Press in London, and the others reading "dead annexe files" and "23 Aug 1962" suggesting that upon Monroe's death this photo was relegated to an obsolete file. The photo has also been crudely categorized in ink as "Nude Shots" and it is likely that this photograph languished for many years. While Schiller did issue photographs from the shoot in large editions later in life, we trace very few examples of vintage prints, as evidenced by the two examples in a larger size recently sold from Schiller's estate, which sold for over $10,000 each (see Julien's, 27 June 2015).
