Wonderful historic newspaper featuring articles on the US Army's pursuit of American Indians following Custer's Last Stand, news from Deadwood, and remarks upon "fake news" circulating about the Indian Wars. The paper was first published in 1869 by Ohio native James Hamilton Mills and continued publication through 1897 during which time the paper promoted Republican politics. Mills held multiple appointed positions during his time as publisher of the paper and thereafter, including Montana Territorial Secretary and State Commissioner of Agriculture, Labor, & Industry. Published just one month after the Battle of Little Bighorn, this paper follows the ongoing conflict between the US Army and Plains Indian tribes as General George Crook and General Alfred Terry pursued the Sioux and Cheyenne. "Crook and Terry Unite Forces. The Sioux in Full Retreat...The Indians are flying down to Yellowstone - say four days ahead of the troops who are following with 15 days' rations. No fight." Additional reports from special correspondent J.V. Bogert relay details of the campaign with a clear sense of urgency and anticipation of more battles to come. The paper also provides a firsthand account from the renowned Western town of Deadwood: We have also a large number of VERY BAD, HARD CHARACTERS among us who openly commit murder without provocation. Neither law nor order prevails; we have no organized system to punish criminals and our government has committed a grave error in allowing the settlement of this country without opening it by proclamation, giving the Governor power to organize a county and appoint county officers, and ensuring peaceable citizens protection against the vagabonds who infest this country. A few days ago Wild Bill, the noted Indian scout, fell by the hand of an assassin. A trial and acquittal was the result. Numerous other crimes of a like nature have been committed. All going unpunished, leaving us in a state of chaos. In a section titled "Campaign Stories," the paper takes a look at fraudulent news stories of the day related to the Indian Wars concluding that "The Indian war has developed an immense amount of lying." It goes on to cite various examples including an account of the Custer fight, which had been reproduced in newspapers as far away as New York and Detroit, and which the paper suggests "manufactures too much." Condition: Some loss and slight separation along spine though paper remains intact. Slight toning. Several small dampstains not affecting text.
