MONTAUBAN, Etienne de (fl. 1691-1695). Relation du voyage du Sieur de Montauban . Bordeaux: Raymond Brun, 1697. Exceedingly rare first edition of the buccaneering voyages of Etienne de Montauban. This account relates to Montauban's piratical operations in the Caribbean and along the West African coast, including several violent engagements with the English. Almost unobtainable, we can only find two auction records of this true first with place of Bordeaux in the imprint : one was sold by G. Martin at the auction of M. Bellanger, Tresorier General du Sceau de France, in Paris in 1740 (lot 3350) and RBH/ABPC record only one other at Sotheby's in 1951. While WorldCat records no copy in institutions, there is a copy in the Bibliothèque de Bordeaux. Not in Sabin, Polak. 12mo (145 x 84mm). Woodcut title device, headpieces (a few very faint spots). Contemporary mottled calf (rebacked and restored preserving parts of original spine).
