Montblanc Charlie Chaplin Artisan Edition

Fine Pens

Estimate
US$20,000 - US$25,000
Price realised:
US$45,000
Beschreibung:

Tribute to Charlie Chaplin, a key figure of early 20th century cinema. The pen's elaborate design, with many visual allusions to Chaplin's iconography, has made it one of Montblanc's most celebrated creations. The skeleton overlay's 18K white gold cog-wheels are inspired by the machines featured in his signature film, Modern Times, and various details suggest aspects of Chaplin's persona: the barrel and cone recall his baggy trousers, the captop is based upon his bowler hat, the clip resembles his cane. The cog-wheels are set with diamonds and the captop star is mother-of-pearl. Medium 18K rhodium-plated gold nib, large 149 size, etched with Chaplin's accoutrements. Outer box, lacquered wood display box, booklet. Limited Edition: 65/88. Excellent condition, not inked. Montblanc is said to have underestimated the labor and expense of making this intricate masterwork, and thus the cost of production exceeded the pre-release advertised price. Montblanc honored the originally-advertised price and quickly sold the full run of 88 pens at a significant loss. It has been said that as a result of this miscalculation, Montblanc has chosen to never again create a pen of this intricacy and labor-intensiveness. This pen can thus be said to represent the highest evolution of Montblanc's design ethic, a pinnacle unlikely ever to be matched. Limitation numbers on pen, booklet and metal plate on lacquer box all match, booklet duly stamped by Montblanc.
