MONTFAUCON, Bernard de (1665-1741). L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en Figures; Supplément au Livre de l'Antiquité . Paris: Florentin Delaulne [and others], 1719-24.
MONTFAUCON, Bernard de (1665-1741). L'Antiquité expliquée et représentée en Figures; Supplément au Livre de l'Antiquité . Paris: Florentin Delaulne [and others], 1719-24. 15 volumes: comprising 5 volumes in 10 of the Expliquée , 5 volumes of the Supplément , 2° (433 x 282 mm). Engraved portrait by J. Audron after N, Largillière, titles printed in red and black, engraved and woodcut vignettes (lacking engraved frontispiece). 1391 engraved plates (including one additional plate in Supplément Vol.I and 4 additional plates in Supplément Vol.II, and with one fewer plate in Supplément Vol.IV and 2 fewer plates in Supplément Vol.V than called for by Cohen/de Ricci). (A few plates and text leaves with marginal tears repaired, one text leaf with tear crossing text repaired, few leaves with light browning or spotting, a few leaves with minor dampstain, not present in all volumes.) Contemporary vellum, covers with central gilt arabesque within gilt panels, spines in 10 compartments with 9 raised bands gilt-lettered in one, brown morocco lettering-piece gilt in one, the rest gilt, edges sprinkled red and blue (a few light stains or scuffs, some covers with volume number written in pencil on upper cover). L'Antiquitée Expliquée served as a fundamental source work of classical antiquity and other motifs for painters, sculptors and architects throughout the Eighteenth Century. The architect, Robert Adam derived many features of his decorative repertoire from it, in particular what he believed to be “Etruscan” motifs. The work occupied Montfauçon for many years, having received contributions and assistance from some of the great European collectors of the time, many of whom are mentioned or credited adjacent to the illustrations. In the absence of a definitive collation for this work, this copy is sold not subject to return. Brunet III-1861; Cicognara 2493; Cohen/de Ricci 731; Lipperheide Ba 6.
