The 12-line printed "Epistle Dedicatory" begins: "Dear Mr. Smith, My writings languished in America before you took charge of them, and as a token of my indebtedness and gratitude I feel I should like to have your name in this book..." There was no printed dedication in earlier editions of Memoirs of My Dead Life: the "Epistle Dedicatory" to Smith appears only in this edition, later editions being dedicated to Edmund Gosse.
