MORONI, Lino. [ ...Descrizione del sacro Monte della Vernia . Florence: 1612]. 2° (462 x 315mm). Engraved portrait of Saint Francis by Domenico Falcini after Jacopo Ligozzi 23 engraved plates by Falcini and Raffaello Schiaminossi after Ligozzi, 2 folding, 4 plates with overslips including one plate with 2 overslips, each plate with facing letterpress description leaf decorated with typographical ornaments. (Text leaves to plates X and Y with outer blank margins extended to size, text leaf to plate A loosely inserted, some light spotting and occasional small marginal tears.) Contemporary limp vellum (lightly stained). Provenance : R.B. (early initails on first leaf). A fine series illustrating one of the most important centre of the Franciscan order. The monastery of the Monte della Verna (La Verna), in the Appenines, was given to Saint Francis and his followers in 1213. The work also illustrates some of the important events in the saint's life: Monte della Verna was where he received the Stigmata. Ligozzi (c.1547-1627) had accompanied Moroni, a member of the Observant Franciscans, to La Verna in 1607. Although he apparently made 25 drawings, only 23 were engraved (see BL cat.).
