MORRIS, Rev. Francis Orpen (1810-1893). A History of British Birds. London: Benjamin Fawcett for Groombridge & Sons, 1851-1857. 6 volumes, royal 8° (242 x 150mm). 358 hand-coloured wood-engraved plates by Fawcett, with a 4pp als from Morris to an unnamed correpondant and a 2pp. letterpress intoduction to the work (dated May 1 1850) loosely inserted in vol.I. Contemporary deep purple calf gilt, covers with central arabesque blocked in blind. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. The most desirable form of this populist but highly popular work: the colouring was carried out under Fawcett and Morris' personal supervision. Nissen IVB 645. [ With :] [Groombrige & Sons, publishers. Beautiful British Birds Favorite Picture Portfolio. London: n.d. but circa 1853]. 4° (281 x 224mm). 8 unbound hand-coloured wood-engraved plates, the subjects within a circle surounded by a broad printed decorative border, all by or after Fawcett. Unbound within a card portfolio decoratively-printed in blue and orange (hinges weak), all within a modern calf box. A rare series, with the subjects printed from the blocks used for Morris' Birds , and probably intended for framing. The subjects are the Redbreast; Turtle Dove; Martin; Goldcrest; Hoopoe; Dipper; Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and the Kingfisher. The date is a supposition based on the fact that all the birds shown appear in vols.I-III of Morris's Birds , and vol.III appeared in 1853. (7)
