Morse, John Torrey, ed. (1840-1937) The American Statesman, Autograph Edition, Extra-illustrated. Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1898-1900; 1908-1918. Forty octavo volumes, limited large paper edition, number 214 of 500, bound in full contemporary crimson crushed morocco gilt, by James MacDonald Co., of New York, front covers with central gold-tooled seal of the United States, t.e.g.; seventeen volumes expertly rebacked, with the original spines laid down, four volumes with joints repaired, a few other joints tender, several endcaps restored, original documents with the occasional fold separation (most repaired) and scattered stains, the set occupying approximately six feet of shelf space, 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 in. (40) This set contains forty original letters and documents inserted into the biographical volumes, including: a signed George Washington letter from Valley Forge, dated 26 December 1777; a 1787 document signed by Benjamin Franklin; and other documents signed by John Adams Alexander Hamilton, Thomas Jefferson Abraham Lincoln, Samuel Adams, Patrick Henry, John Jay, John Marshall Gouverneur Morris, James Madison, Albert Gallatin John Quincy Adams, John Randolph Andrew Jackson Martin Van Buren, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C. Calhoun, Thomas H. Benton, Lewis Cass, William H. Seward, Salmon Portland Chase, Charles Francis Adams, Charles Sumner, Thaddeus Stevens, Ulysses S.
