[MORTIER, Pieter (1661-1711).] Carte De La Manche ... Reveue et Corrigée Par le Sr. Sanson. Paris: Hubert Jaillot, 1692 [but, Amsterdam: Pieter Mortier, 1693]. This strikingly large and highly detailed map of the English Channel is in fact one of Mortier's counterfeit products. Alexis-Hubert Jaillot arranged for Adrien and Guillaume Sanson to rework the maps of Nicolas Sanson on two sheets, and these formed the basis for the Atlas Nouveau of 1681, 1684 and 1689. However, Pieter Mortier pirated this atlas, changed the date to 1692, and published as part of the Neptune françois (see lots 60 and 61) in 1693. Koeman IV, M.Mor 1 A, chart 12; Pastoureau Jaillot I D 85. Double-page engraved map, coastlines coloured in outline by a contemporary hand , verso blank, of the English Channel, but including the south-eastern tip of Ireland, part of Belgium, and part of Brittany, with extensive inland detail of the Seine to Paris and along the Thames to London, rhumb lines intersecting in 3 compass roses, 597 x 820mm (plate mark), 635 x 960mm (sheet).
