MOSCOW -- A collection of letterhead with engraved views of Moscow and St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg and Moscow: Loginov and others, c.1834.
MOSCOW -- A collection of letterhead with engraved views of Moscow and St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg and Moscow: Loginov and others, c.1834. 16 leaves (of 48) plus 4, 2° (240 x 203mm to 254 x 206mm). Engraved headpiece to each leaf, showing sixteen scenes in Moscow and four in St. Petersburg, the latter are probably from another series. Those of Moscow are signed by the lithographer, Loginov. (Occasional slight marginal staining, some scattered spotting.) Original marbled cardboard portfolio with printed light-blue paper cover, original ties (re-backed, some light staining and rubbing). Provenance : Knizhnaia Lavka Litfonda SSSR (bookplate) -- twentieth century stamp. Loginov was one of the first to specialise in letter paper decorated with engraved vignettes, which began to appear in Russia around the 1830s. Due to the expense of producing such engravings, this kind of writing paper began to be replaced by paper with factory-made illustrations in the 1870s. This collection shows views of Moscow including Red Square, the Bol'shoi Theatre, the Kremlin, and in St. Petersburg the Winter Palace and Nevskii Prospekt among others. One sheet has a watermark with the date 1833.
