Thomas Dewar, the 1st Baron Dewar created several Challenge Shields for various sports around the United Kingdom and abroad. For cycling he donated, between 1901 and 1928, The Dewar Challenge Shield, a heavily-embossed solid-silver plaque depicting goddesses and with allusions to Scotland, together with a profile of a racing cyclist centrally-mounted. This example, which is a hollow-cast copy in brass, and mounted on a shaped wooden mount, is believed to have been given to the award recipient when the original shield had to be retuned annually. Unfortunately, the engraved lozenge, which would have been attached to the upper tablet, giving the name of the recipient and club, is missing. Originally it may have been silver-plated, otherwise it is in good condition. The height of the wooden shield is 16-inches (41cm). (1)
