Oblong 2 o (241 x 336 mm). Engraved throughout, vocal score, 38 separate numbers bound in one, separately paginated. Decorative general title-page, with the rare leaf listing the musical numbers (missing in some sets). Title engravings for nos. VI, VII, IX, XIII, XIX, 23, 24, 27. (Pages 187-188 in Section 31 lacking but supplied in ink by an early owner; also lacking pp.211-214 in Section 37, some pale dampstaining, some foxing). Early quarter calf and pastepaper boards (slightly rubbed). Provenance : occasional notations and additions in a neat early hand. FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VOCAL SCORE OF "THE MAGIC FLUTE" Whimsical, playful and profound, Mozart's final opera features romance, mysticism and a quest for spiritual transcendence through love. With a witty libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder (1751-1812), it was premiered to great acclaim on 30 September 1791. Recognizing its popularity, several publishers rushed into print: the firm of Artaria published only 24 numbers, and an edition by Hoffmeister was never completed. Kozeluch's edition is the most complete and accurate, and was issued beginning in November 1791 and finished in September 1793, after Mozart's death.
