Title: [Mr. William Shakespeares Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. Published according to the true originall copies] Author: Shakespeare, William Place: [London] Publisher: [Printed by Tho. Cotes...] Date: [1632] Description: [20], 303, [1], 46, 49-100, [2], 69-232, 168, 269-419, [1] pp. (but lacking 17 leaves, 16 of which are supplied in facsimile). A6 (-A1, 3, & 5), *4, A-2B6 (-B3-4, D2-5), 2C2, a-y6 (-l3), 2a-3c6 (-aa3-4, zz3-4), 3d4 (-3d1,2,4). All lacking leaves but for A5 (the "Effigies" leaf) supplied from a later facsimile edition. Double column text within typographical rules. Woodcut headpieces and initials. (Folio) 32.5x22 cm. (12¾x8½"), early 20th century full brown morocco, red leather spine label from an earlier binding laid down. The second folio edition of William Shakespeare’s Works, one of the landmarks of English literature. Essentially a page-for-page reprint of the first folio edition of 1623. Gregg notes that, “Though many errors were introduced in the course of reprinting, the text of the present edition shows signs of careful, if unauthorized, revision.” The primary publisher was Robert Allot with three additional partners, and thus variations in the imprint, however the present copy lacks the title-page and other prelims, so the question of issue is moot. Bookplate of Ronald Perkins Bridges on front pastedown endpaper. STC 22274; Greg III, pp.1113-1116; PMM 122 (1st Folio). Lot Amendments Condition: Lacking the following leaves: A1, A3, A5, B3, B4, D2, D3, D4, D5, l3, aa3, aa4, zz3, zz4, ddd1, ddd2, ddd4 (all but A5 supplied in facsimile); repairs to margins of leaves A2, A4 & l4 without loss of text; leaves X2, c1 & ss2 chipped with loss of a few letters, long repaired tear to leaf ccc4; leaves rr3 & rr4 slightly shorter, possibly supplied from another copy; a few other leaves with small chips and short tears without loss of text; occasional minor soiling, toning or faint staining to contents; overall very good save for the missing leaves.
