Große Vielfalt künstlerischer Ausdrucksformen und Techniken. Schaffte mit 14 Jahren die Aufnahmeprüfung der Kunstakademie La Llotija im heimischen Barcelona. 1897 kurzzeitig Studium an der Königlichen Akademie von San Fernando, Madrid. 1898 Rückkehr nach Barcelona, wo er in avantgardistischen Künstlerkreisen des katalanischen Modernisme verkehrte, u.a. mit Ramon Casas, Carlos Casagemas, Isidre Nonell Ramon Pichot i Gironès und Santiago Rusiñol die sich im Café und Künstlerzentrum Els Quatre Gats trafen. Ab Juni 1898 verbrachte er acht Monate mit seinem Malerfreund Manuel Pallarès in dessen Heimatstadt Horta de Sant Joan. 1899 lernte er den Dichter Jaime Sabartés kennen, der sein enger Freund und 1935 sein Sekretär werden sollte. Im Februar 1900 erste Einzelausstellung im Els Quatre Gats. 1901 kurzzeitige Mitarbeit in Zeitschrift Arte Joven. Danach Reise nach Paris: Der Kunsthändler Pere Mañach, die Galeristin Berthe Weill und der Kunsthändler und Verleger Ambroise Vollard bemühten sich um Picasso. Picasso widmete 1901 seinem Freund Casagemas das Bild Evokation – das Begräbnis Casagemas. Bekanntschaft mit Gertrude und Leo Stein sowie mit Matisse. Wilhelm Uhde machte den jungen deutschen Galeristen Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, der in der Rue Vignon 28 seine erste Galerie eröffnet hatte, auf Picasso aufmerksam. Kahnweiler wurde sein wichtigster Förderer und stellte im selben Jahr Picassos Werke aus. In Deutschland war Picasso 1910 in der Ausstellung der Neuen Künstlervereinigung München vertreten sowie 1912 in der Ausstellung des Sonderbundes in Köln und in Herwarth Waldens Galerie Der Sturm in Berlin. Abkehr von den Kubisten (1916–1924), Auseinandersetzung mit dem Surrealismus (1924–1936). 1923 traf Picasso den Surrealisten André Breton 1928 Auftauchen das Minotaurus-Motiv in seinen Werken. 1935 Radierungsfolge Minotauromachie, inspiriert von Francisco de Goyas Tauromaquia. Picasso ist Schöpfer der Gemälde Les Desmoiselles d'Avignon, eines Schlüsselbilds der Klassischen Moderne, sowie des Monumentalgemäldes Guernica (1937) über die Schrecken des Spanischen Bürgerkrieges. Umfassende Sammlungen in Museen in Paris, Barcelona und Madrid. Seine Hinwendung zu klassischen Interpretationen von Meisterwerken nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zeigten Werke wie Frauen von Algier von Eugène Delacroix 1955, Diego Velazquez’ Las Meninas 1957 oder Édouard Manets Frühstück im Freien 1961. Bereits 1946 hatte eine Ausstellung im Louvre seine Bilder denen klassischer Meister gegenübergestellt. Picasso ist in vielen bedeutenden Kunstmuseen, die die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts ausstellen, prominent vertreten. Das Museu Picasso in Barcelona und das Musée Picasso in Antibes entstanden bereits zu Lebzeiten.
