NAPOLEON I (Emperor of France, 1769-1821). Two letters signed ('Napol' and 'Np') to General Clarke (Minister of War), the first, including two autograph corrections, Paris, 29 January 1808 , referring to the defence of La Spezia, giving instructions for the deployment of artillery and batteries to protect the Gulf where the establishment of the mortar batteries is to make it safe for shipping, 'telle qu'une escadre francause ou alliée s'y trouve à l'abri de tout événement et protégée contre une escadre supérieure', 2 pages, 4°, two words in autograph, contemporary annotations on verso (ink blot with part loss of one word) ; the second, St. Cloud, 13 September 1808 , instructing Clarke to order all the detachments that can be spared from Geneva, Turin, Grenoble, Nice and Mondovi to be sent to make up the 4th battalion in Italy, 2 pages, 4°, contemporary annotation on verso . Napoleon lists the depots of 21 regiments of the line in France and Northern Italy who are to send all available men to the army of Italy before October. Henri Jacques Guillaume Clarke (1765-1818) was private secretary to Napoleon from 1799-1804 and Minister of War from 1807-1814. He was created Duke of Feltre in August 1809. (2)
