Neal Dow Presentation Oval Porcelain Covered Tureen and Underplate, Burslem, England, late 19th century, the cover, bowl, and underplate decorated with puce transfer bust portraits of notable prohibitionist Neal S. Dow, with backstamp inscribed "United Kingdom Alliance For the Total Suppression of the Liquor Traffic/W. Wildblood Burslem Staff." tureen ht. 8, dia. 13 1/2, 16 in. Note: Neal Dow (1804-1897) was known as the "Father of Prohibition." He was a founding member of the Maine Temperance Society in 1827, and in 1851 became the prohibitionist mayor of Portland, Maine. He served as brigadier general in the Civil War and co-founded the National Temperance Society and Publishing House with James Black in 1865. Dow ran for President of the United States as the Prohibition Party's candidate in the 1880 election and came in fourth. This tureen and underplate and a large porcelain service was reportedly presented to Maria Cornelia Durant Maynard Dow, the second wife of Neal Dow in April 16, 1867 by Temperance friends of the Staffordshire Potteries. Sold for the benefit of the Framingham History Center, Framingham, Massachusetts.
