NELSON, Horatio, Viscount (1758-1805). Autograph letter signed ('Bronte Nelson') to Sir William Hamilton n.p., 28 February 1800, one page, 4to , bifolium, docket (trace of guard, minor spotting). Provenance : Alfred Morrison collection, II, 464 -- Edwin Wolf 2nd collection -- Christie's, 21 June 1989, lot 231 -- Sotheby's, 18 July 1991, lot 432. NEWS OF THE CONVENTION OF EL ARISH. Nelson reports the news that 'the Turks & French did on the 24th Jany sign a Convention for the return of the whole French Army to Europe with their arms in their hands, I consider this event of such Importance for you to know that I take the chance of this reaching you before the other. Sir S[idney] S[mith] agrees to the whole'. The letter concludes with 'the kindest regards to Lady Hamilton'. Nelson's opposition to Sidney Smith's agreement with the French commander in Egypt, Kleber, that the French forces in Egypt were to be transported back to France at allied expense is understandable, in that it served in some sense to undo the effects of his great victory at the Battle of the Nile 18 months earlier. In the event, the new commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, Lord Keith, was instructed not to ratify the convention, and instead led a new land offensive, culminating in the capitulation of the French after the siege of Alexandria -- following which they were, after all, repatriated in British ships.
