[ Amazon , circa 29 September 1801], 1½ pages, 4to , autograph address panel, traces of seal (seal tear in blank lower left corner, small split in left margin, affecting the first letters of 8 words, remains of guard). Provenance : Edwin Wolf 2nd Collection (Christie's sale, 21.6.1989, lot 252). An impassioned 'Thomson' letter in which Nelson expresses distraction at his separation from Lady Hamilton: 'Continue to love me as Lady Hamilton does. She knows my thoughts and although this letter is incoherent yet she will explain it all. May the heavens keep you amen, amen, amen'. In his frenzied mood Nelson forgets to keep up the 'Thomson' charade and refers directly to Lady Hamilton: 'I came on board but no Emma, no no my heart will break I am in silent distraction. The four pictures of Lady Hn. are hung up but alas I have lost the original'.
