Die sogenannten «Grottenstühle» waren kuriose Gartenmöbel des Barock und Rokoko, die in künstlich angelegten Grotten zur Nutzung kamen.

Italy 19th C. Carved walnut. Three-dimensionally carved legs with rocaille ornaments, seating and back rest carved like an opened shell. Arm rests in form of baroque dolphins. Good restored condition.

The so called «Grotto chairs» were curiosity garden furniture in the Baroque and Rococo periods, that were used in artificially installed grottos.
Provenance: estate of a German noble family.
