NEW YORK CITY GRAMERCY PARK]. An unusual archive relating to the ownership of lands comprising Gramercy Park and surroundings, developed by Samuel Ruggles (1800-1881), a Yale-educated entrepreneur who purchased lands about a swamp the Dutch called Crommashie, that he drained and divided into lots by 1845. Each landowner was granted access to a private central park; it remains the only surviving private park in New York. Several documents relate to lands owned by Free Negroes, one sold by the estate of Governor Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672). CONTENTS: STUYVESANT, Judith. Manuscript document signed, New Orange, New Netherlands, 24 September 1674. 2pp., folio , in Dutch. The "worthy mistress Judith Stuyvesant widow and executor of the deceased Mr. Peter Stuyvesant" sells land to "Francis Bastiaense a free Negro" in "the Bouwery." -- GOUVERNEUR, Abraham.
