London: for Benjamin Motte, 1729. 2 volumes, 8 o (196 x 117 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces by A. Motte, 2 folding letterpress tables, 47 folding engraved plates, 3 engraved headpieces by Motte. (Some minor marginal worming occasionally touching letters, minor spotting and dampstaining, mostly marginal, paper flaw on Y4 in Vol. 2 affecting a few letters slightly.) Contemporary speckled calf gilt (few small repairs, minor wear). Provenance : Christopher O'Brien (signature on titles dated 1741); Marine Guard (ink stamp on titles). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH of the Principia . This edition also includes an English translation of Newton's System of the World (see lot 698), presumably by Motte. John Machin's unsuccessful attempt to rectify Newton's lunar theory is included at the end. Babson/Newton 20; Gray 23; Wallis 23; Norman 1587. (2)
