Niccolò Cassana war der Sohn des Malers Giovanni Francesco und der Bruder von Giovanni Agostino, der ebenfalls Maler war. Niccolò malte vor allem Genrebilder, Stillleben und Portraits. Als Portraitmaler wurde er von Prinz Ferdinando de' Medici sehr geschätzt. So durfte er für ihn auch Kunstkäufe tätigen und viele berühmte Persönlichkeiten des florentiner Adels malen. Einige Quellen berichten, Cassana sei außerdem ein fachkundiger Restaurator und guter Nachahmer antiker Meister gewesen. Das hier vorliegende großformatige Werk stellt Cassanas Kunstfertigkeit sowohl als Portraitmaler als auch als Tiermaler unter Beweis. Es handelt sich hier um eine fantasiereiche Allegorie der Eitelkeit und der Lust, dargestellt als eindeutig erotische Szene. Das Werk besitzt eine feine Ironie, die schon fast ins Groteske geht und für Niccolo Cassanas Schaffen so typisch ist. Man denke hier an Werke wie „Ritratto della nana Angiola Biondi“ (Bildnis der Zwergin Angiola Biondi) oder an die sogenannte „Köchin“, die beide in den Uffizien in Florenz zu sehen sind.
