(Occasional spotting). Contemporary green morocco, front cover with the monogram of Tsar Nicholas I, covers with frames in gilt and black, and large arabesque corner pieces in black, gilt edges, white watered-silk endpapers. Provenance : Nicholas I (binding) -- 'C.V.P.F' (title-stamp; bookplate removed). FROM THE IMPERIAL LIBRARY OF TSAR NICHOLAS I, IN A FINE BINDING. First edition of this early work of Tibetan philology and the product of the expedition to Tibet which had been sponsored by Nicholas I. It is ONE OF THE FIRST TIBETAN GRAMMARS IN A WESTERN LANGUAGE, preceded only by Csoma de Körös's Grammar of 1834. Schmidt, an active lexicographer, had also written a Mongolian grammar and a Mongolian-German-Russian dictionary, and later published a Tibetan-German dictionary.
