Provenance : Benedictine Abbey of St. Gregory, Peterhausen (founded in 983, and secularised in 1802; ownership inscription above title, dated 1600, and library stamp on title verso). The 60 plates in this rare edition, re-engraved by Conrad Saldörffer after the original French edition (Lyons, 1567), comprise images of predominantly Turkish or Greek costumes that were much copied in later costume books; Volume II did not appear. Nicolas de Nicolay a French traveller, draughtsman and geographer to Henri II, first went to Turkey and Greece in or soon after 1542. From 1551 to 1552, he accompanied the French ambassador Gabriel d'Aramon to Constantinople, visiting Algeria, Tripoli and Cythera on their outward voyage.
