Nicolas de Nicolay Seigneur d'Arfeuille (1517-1583) Der Erst Theyl. Von der Schiffart und Rayss in die Turckey unnd gegen Oriennt . Nuremberg: Dietrich Gerlatz, 1572. 2° in 4s (315 x 200mm). Oval engraved title printed in red with hand-coloured etched pictorial border printed from a separate plate, 60 etched costume plates by C. Saldörffer after the author, ALL FINELY COLOURED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (2 plates torn with loss, 9 other plates with clean tears in lower plate area, R3 with clean tear affectiing 11 lines of text, other marginal tears to plates and text, M1 with small laminated repair on verso, frequent marginal soiling and occasional waterstaining, final leaf with lower corner torn away.) Contemporary German blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, covers elaborately panelled with blind rules and rolls, including a crest roll, a biblical roll signed by the tool-cutter H.K., and 2 portrait rolls, one signed by the tool-cutter I.M. [cf. Haebler I.291-2], brass and leather clasps, original pastedowns (lacking one clasp). Provenance : Benedictine Abbey of St. Gregory, Peterhausen (founded in 983, and secularised in 1802; ownership inscription above title, dated 1600, and library stamp on title verso). FIRST GERMAN EDITION OF THE FIRST PRINTED WORK ON ORIENTAL COSTUME WITH FINE CONTEMPORARY COLOURING. 'La première série de documents sérieux sur les habillements du proche Orient' (Colas). The 60 plates in this rare edition, re-engraved by Conrad Saldörffer after the original French edition (Lyons, 1567), comprise images of predominantly Turkish or Greek costumes that were much copied in later costume books; Volume II did not appear. Nicolas de Nicolay a French traveller, draughtsman and geographer to Henri II, first went to Turkey and Greece in or soon after 1542. From 1551 to 1552, he accompanied the French ambassador Gabriel d'Aramon to Constantinople, visiting Algeria, Tripoli and Cythera on their outward voyage.
