Provenienza Torino, Galleria Galatea Torino, Galleria Gissi De Staël compie un lungo viaggio in Italia nel febbraio del 1953: Firenze, Ravenna, Venezia, Milano, per poi giungere in estate in Sicilia. I templi, le città e i solari paesaggi siculi sono da lui ritratti in una serie di opere che testimoniano l'effetto profondo che questa visita ebbe sul suo linguaggio. Benché amante degli scenari nordeuropei, della Manica, delle marine normanne, i paesaggi successivi al suo soggiorno siciliano comunicano la svolta di De Staël verso uno stile più brillante, fluente, fatto di forme ritagliate, squadrate, intensificate dal contrasto netto tra zone d'ombra e di luce abbacinante tutta mediterranea. La tavolozza si schiarisce notevolmente e la fusione tra collage e materia cromatica conferisce maggiore vivacità e profondità alla composizione, in una sintesi formale costruita sul contrasto tra la luminosità del cielo e i territori aridi e assolati del meridione italiano. L'impianto della veduta, organizzato in ampie campate orizzontali e monocrome, consente all'artista di definire la sostanza unitaria che, a suo dire, costituiva l'insieme delle cose immerse in una stessa luce. Nicolas De Staël took a long journey through Italy, beginning in February of 1953, to Florence, Ravenna, Venice, Milan, and spent the summer in Sicily. He portrayed the temples, the cities and the solar Sicilian landscapes in a series of works that bear witness to the profound effect this visit had on his language. Although he loved the scenarios of northern Europe, of the English Channel, of the Normandy seashores, the landscapes De Staël painted after his stay in Sicily communicate his turn toward a more brilliant, fluent style made of cut-out, squared-off forms, intensified by a clean contrast between shaded areas and areas of dazzling, totally Mediterranean light. His palette lightened considerably; his fusion of collage and chromatic material lends greater vivacity and depth to his composition, in a formal synthesis built on the contrast between the luminosity of the sky and the arid and sun-drenched territories of the Italian south. The layout of the view here, organised in broad, practically monochrome, horizontal fields, allows the artist to define a unitary substance which, as he said, constituted the essence of things immersed in the same light.
