Cancel slip on verso of *3, final blank. Letterpress title within elaborate woodcut border, woodcut headpiece and initial to dedication, 58 engraved plates only (of 61) attributed to Louis Danet, ALL FINELY HAND-COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, INCLUDING A SECOND VERSION OF THE PLATE FACING PAGE 144. (Lacking the Femme Turque menant ses enfants , the Cuisinier Turc and the Fille de Joye Turque , 12 other plates repaired, the title and the Femme Turque allant par la ville cut down around the image and mounted. Lacking blank **4, *3 torn with loss, q4 torn and repaired). Old later calf (rebacked, worn). Provenance : Unidentified early manuscript inscription (on verso of plate facing page 144); Hon. Marmaduke Burton Dawnay Langley, Wykeham Abbey, Yorks. (1777-1851, stamp on verso of title). FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE AND VERY RARE WITH THE PLATES HAND-COLOURED. The first issue is dated 1567 on the title but is otherwise identical to the second. Nicolay was the royal geographer sent by Henri II to Constantinople to join D'aramon's embassy in 1551. The illustrations are claimed by Nicolay as his own work, Baudrier assigns them to Danet, in any case they have been described as the finest and most influential pictorial introduction of Turkish characters and costumes.
