NIKOLAUS-JOSEPH, BARON VON JACQUIN (1727-1817) Miscellanea Austriaca ad botanicam, chemiam, et historiam naturalem spectantia, cum figuris partim coloratis. Vienna: ex officina Krausiana, typis J. Gerold (vol.I), M.A. Schmidt (vol.II), 1778-1781. 2 volumes in one, 4 (222 x 177mm). 44 hand-coloured engraved plates by Jakob Adam 3 folding. (Some light foxing to text, two-inch tear to plate 20 in vol. I.) Near-contemporary English red straight-grained morocco gilt, covers with elaborate panelled design, spine in six compartments with double-raised bands, lettered in the second, gilt edges (spine somewhat discoloured and with small chip to head). Provenance : Heneage Finch, 4th Earl of Aylesford (1751-1812, Packington Hall, Warwickshire, bookplate). A fine copy of the first edition. Like its successor, Jacquin's Collecteanea , this publication has several of the attributes of a periodical: no pre-determined end and mixed contents. These included articles by Jacquin, friends and colleagues, the most important of which is probably Franz Xavier von Wulfen's Plantae rariores Carinthiacae in vol.II. Hunt 655 (imperfect); Nissen BBI 975; Pritzel 4367; Stafleu & Cowan 3248.
