A SIGNED HUAC PAMPHLET FROM NIXON'S EARLY DAYS AS AN ANTI-COMMUNIST CRUSADER IN THE CONGRESS. "This is the story of Communist spying in the United States," the pamphlet begins. "But don't look for the names of spies. We don't name them. What we are trying to do is to show you that there is such a thing as a Soviet spy system in our country..." The Committee then presents a series of Questions-and-Answers on the espionage threat such as: "What has happened in the atomic field? Since the atom bomb is Russia's chief worry right now, she has several spy rings concentrating on that alone...They have penetrated right to the very heart of our atomic work... Then haven't they made away with some of our atomic secrets? We KNOW they have, but just how much of the entire formula of the bomb is unknown." Uncovering spies in high places made Richard Nixon's career as a national political figure. His dogged and devastating cross-examination of Alger Hiss in 1948 helped substantiate the accusations of espionage made against Hiss by Whittaker Chambers, and ultimately led to Hiss's conviction for perjury. Early in 1949 Senator Joseph McCarthy put himself on the front pages with charges of American spies working in the State Department on behalf of Russia. Critics denounced McCarthy for his reckless, unsubstantiated charges, and the Committee in this pamphlet, seems to be trying to emphasize the seriousness of the espionage threat.
