NO THOROUGHFARE]. -- LEQUEL, Louis. Identity or No Thoroughfare... Dramatized from the Christmas Story of Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins . New York: Samuel French, [ca 1868]. 8 o (187 x 115 mm). Original orange printed wrappers (some minor chipping along spine); red cloth chemise and slipcase. Provenance : Kenyon Starling (bookplate). A dramatized edition, number 348 of French's Standard Drama , of Collins's and Dickens's original story published in December 1867 as one of the Christmas numbers in All the Year Round . Collins adapted the story for the stage during Dickens's absence in America, and the play was first performed at the Adelphi Theatre on 26 December 1867, successfully running for 200 performances. The plotline centers around two boys from the Foundling Hospital who are given the same name, and mystery, concealed identities, and disasterous cosequences result. Yale/Gimbel C154.
