NORDENSKIÖLD, Nils Adolf Erik (1832-1901). Periplus: an Essay on the Early History of Charts and Sailing-directions; Translated from the Swedish Original by Francis A. Bather. Stockholm: P. A. Norstedt & Söner, 1895-97. The first English edition of Nordenskiöld’s history of cartography, with sixty large facsimile maps. Nordenskiöld’s interest in Arctic exploration led him to collect important early maps, on which he published two important monographs. His collection is now held by the University of Helsinki. Folio (511 x 354mm). 60 double-page maps, 2 of which in color and gilt; numerous in-text illustrations throughout. Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards by G. Hedberg (spine faded, light wear to caps and joints). Provenance : S. W. (bookplate) – Charlotte Du Rietz Rare Books. [ With :] Nordenskiöld. Festnummer utgifven af Ny Illustrerad Tidning.
