Clarkson. Frontispiece portrait. (8vo) period half black morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt, top edge gilt. First Edition. Biography of Norris Wright Cuney, the "most respected and influential Negro ever to live in Texas," written by his daughter. Born in 1846, son of a Texas planter and his slave, Curry was educated in Pennsylvania, moved to Galveston after the Civil War, and became active in the Union League, the political arm of Radical Republican Reconstruction in Texas. Though influential, his success in politics was mixed, due to the antipathy of white voters. He died in 1889. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding rubbed, some wear, names on endpapers; good.
