Description As a Member of Parliament for Yorkshire Henry William Wilberforce lead the movement to abolish slavery in the British Empire; Wilberforce was associated with a number of notable educators, politicians, and abolitionists including John Newton William Pitt Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton This lot is comprised of Wilberfoce's book "An Abstract of the Evidence Delivered Before a Select Committee of the House of Commons in the years 1790, and 1791; on the part of the Petitioners for the Abolition o f the Slave-trade. London: printed by James Phillips George Yard, Lombard Street. M.DCC.XCI. four William Wilberforce autographed letters one addressed to Lord Kenyon, signed W. Wilberforce dated 1792, with red seal; second letter possibly addressed to Mr. Hagley Esq. pertaining to William Wilberforces' acceptance of his appointment to the Office of Treasureship for "Mr. Rose's Son" likely Sir George Henry Rose son of George Rose and grandson of David Rose signed yours sincerely W. Wilberforce and date 29th Oct. 1806; a letter regarding his sending money to a Mr. Tinkin, signed WW and likely dated 1817 but seems to read 1827, with W. Wilberforce signature in left margin; letter addressed to P.M. Spencer Pereval signed W. Wilberforce and dated July 15, 1810, this letter is mounted on cardstock; the last letter by William Wilberforce's son signed Henry William Wilberforce and dated Jan. 21 1865, includes envelope postmarked JA29 65 Bunyan, John The Pilgram's Progress, in two parts, The Fourth Edition, London: 1823 inscribed by William Wilberforce with his signature W Wilberforce 1825, in burgundy folio, The New Week's Preparation For a Worthy receiving of the Lord's Supper, As Recommended and Appointed by the Church of England, London, with William Wilberforce's library label and an inscription stating this was a gift from Rev. Samuel Wilberforce, dated 1834
Measurements H/W: Spencer Pereval letter page folded 9 1/8 by 7 3/8 inches, Lord Kenyon letter page folded 7 7/8 by 4 3/4 inches Weight Condition Abstract of the Evidence with wear to cover, bends at corners, pages slightly yellowed, and with fraying along edges, with large folding plate miss-folded and with associated creasing and wear; Lord Keuyon letter folded in half horizontally and with additional creasing associated with previous folding, slight toning, scattered stains and discoloration, and with a loss to one upper corner and an adjacent tear along bottom edge, wax seal dry and cracked; M. Rose's Son letter with creasing associated with previous folding, and with other creases, light toning, soiling, stains, and minor tears along edges; Mr. Tinkin letter with creasing associated with previous folding and other creases, paper toned and with staining; Spencer Pereval letter on page folded horizontally with additional creasing associated with previous folding, paper slightly toned and with scattered staining, pack half of page with four small holes to neat the upper right corner and two near the center , mounted on cardstock, with two separate notes to the back side of the second half not by Wilberforce; Henry Wilberforce letter page folded horizontally into two halves, with additional creasing associated with previous folding minimally toned and with light staining; The Pilgrim's Progress with cover worn and with losses, front and back board each detached, pages toned, with Wilberforce's inscription on fly-leaf page and additional inscriptions in pencil to end papers; The New Weeks Preparation with cover worn, pages toned and with scattered minor bends and folds; all books possibly lacking pages though pages not counted
