Title: Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula. Wahre Bildtnuss des Gantzen Erden Krayses mit Allen seinen Theilen Author: Merian, Matthaus Place: Nuremberg Publisher: Date: 1638-[1646+] Description: Copper-engraved map of the world. 26x35 cm. (10¼x13¾") incl. title at top. Map of the world prepared to accompany the German language edition of Pierre d'Avity's Les Empires...du Monde, and subsequenly used in other works. It was copied from Blaeu's then-current world map, reduced in size by about two-thirds, and without the decorative border. Shirley notes that the "engraving is neatly executed, with Germanic touches to the lettering." There are two polar projections in lower corners. California is in pre-insular form. This is the second state, first issued in 1646, without Merian's imprint. Shirley 345. Lot Amendments Condition: 1x1½" piece replaced at lower left affecting a compass rose and the M in Magallanica, neat repair at lower right, very good. Item number: 197461
