Le royaume de Batié fut un des hauts lieux de la grande statuaire des royaumes des Bangwa orientaux. Elle reste malheureusement peu connue sinon par le fonds photographique réuni par Lecoq en 1946 et quelques œuvres présentes dans les collections des musées allemands. Cependant, un certain nombre de statuettes mu-po, apanage des sociétés ku'n'gan, d'un style aisément identifiable semblent avoir été l'œuvre d'un artiste du XIXe siècle dont l'histoire n'a pas retenu le nom. Toutes ont été collectées dans les environs proches de Batié. Elles représentent le plus souvent une femme gravide et nue au ventre épanoui, les bras repliés et les mains au menton dans un geste symbolisant la méditation et la sagesse (Harter, 1986). Les grands yeux en amandes encadrent un nez à peine indiqué tandis que la mâchoire au prognathisme prononcé équilibre le volume de l'abdomen. Une coiffe en forte saillie encadre l'ensemble du visage. D'une taille importante, notre exemplaire se distingue par la puissance de sa sculpture et la remarquable articulation de ses volumes. La maîtrise de ce maître-sculpteur de Batié est à son paroxysme et son œuvre atteint ici une grande perfection perceptible sous tous les angles que le regard de l'amateur choisira. The Batié kingdom was one of the greatest center of large-scale statuary in the kingdoms of eastern Bangwa. Unfortunately, it is still little known except through the photo collection assembled by Lecoq in 1946 and a few works in German museums collections. But several Mu-po statuettes, produced in Ku'n'gan societies in a readily identifiable style, seem to have been the work of a single unknown artist of the 19th century. All the works were acquired near Batié. Most of the time they show a pregnant woman naked with a well-rounded belly, her arms close to her body and her hands on her chin in a gesture that symbolises meditation and wisdom (Harter, 1986). The big, almond-shaped eyes are set either side of the barely sketched nose, while the protruding jaw gives balance to the prominent abdomen. A headdress stands out clearly around the face. This large-scale example is remarkable for the power of the sculpture and the striking relationship between the different parts. The skill of the master-sculptor of Batié reaches its climax. The work achieves perfection, as it can be seen from whatever angle.
